Abstract

This study is the first to exploit county variation for insights on the causes of child SSI caseloads. Health and economic variables explain a large share of the variation in receipt across counties. They explain 30 to 40% of the 2003 to 2008 caseload growth and about 25% of the 2008 to 2011 trend.
