Students’ entry characteristics and academic success

Abstract

The aim of the present analysis is to deepen the study of the relationship between some of the fundamental characteristics of students at the time of enrollment at the university (gender, family socio-economic background, secondary education ...) and their success in university studies (grade and regularity). The analysis will allow to determine, as a result, the individual characteristics that tend to be associated with a good academic performance. In what degree courses are the students with good perspectives of success more prevalent today? Are these the same disciplines in which more promising students were already present in the university system prior to the reform (DM 509/99)? The present research addresses the graduates of Italian universities involved in the AlmaLaurea Graduates’ Profile Survey, and updates and extends a previous analysis restricted to the 2008 first-level graduates of the University of Bologna.
