Abstract

The proper approach in my view is to use statistics to illustrate the economic analysis and exploration of deeper processes, not the reverse, which I think provides fewer chances of unveiling the deeper, substantive relations. Nonetheless, I will try to analyse the tendencies in the figures and identify the main driving forces behind them. I will strive to reveal the main, decisive factors behind the medium-term tendencies in the world economy. This will be helped by looking back on earlier decades in the main tables. Long-term comparative examination will also be assisted by investigating the background to the changes since the turn of the millennium.
