Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyse the efficiency of the travel agencies operatingin Spain, and to examine the determining factors of such efficiency, in terms of verticalintegration, market concentration, size and performance. The methodology employed is based on different techniques for the measurement of the efficiency (stochastic frontier production function and Data Envelopment Analysis, DEA), as well as on Tobit regression models. The empirical application carried-out on a sample of 50 Spanish travel agencies reveals, on the one hand, high levels of technical and scale in efficiencies, specially decreasing returns to scale; and, on the other hand, that size and performance are the determining factors of scale efficiency, while market concentrationis the determining factor of technical efficiency.
