Viver a Crédito: Práticas de Empréstimo no Consumo Individual e na Venda a Retalho (Lisboa, Séculos XVIII e XIX)

Abstract

This paper tries to understand the role of credit in the commercialisation of essential goods. Firstly, it will be underlined the social diffusion of credit. Secondly, the importance of credit to consumers will be considered. In the third part, the analysis will move from the consumers to the sellers, focusing on the role credit had to the economic activity of shopkeepers. Credit practices between sellers and customers and between sellers and their suppliers will then be analysed. In the last section we will try to explain why was so common the use of credit mechanisms in the different phases of market provisioning. It will be argued that the main reason to explain the successive credits which involved the several elements of this circuit was the irregularity of individual and familiar incomes' flows
