Abstract

José Frederico Laranjo (1846-1910) was for many years a Portuguese M. P. for the Partido Progressista, having after that been made a Pear. He was also a teacher at the Law School of the University of Coimbra, having lectured, among others, studies on Political Economy, Administrative Law and Constitutional Law. What are the traces, in is thought as an economist, of the classical school and of christian economics? What is the influence of Marx and the one of the marginalist revolution? What about “German” historicism and organicism and “French” positivism? And to what system or lack of it, to what coherence or incoherence, may have given origin the crossing and melting of such and so disparate elements? In this paper, answers will be searched for these and similar questions. Above all, it will be pursued the detection of the conscious social theory, as well as spontaneous one, that as, right or wrong, linked the work of Laranjo the economist with the ones of Laranjo the constitutionalist, Laranjo the theorist of Portuguese colonisation, Laranjo the politician, Laranjo the historian of Portuguese economic thought, etc. And, of course, Laranjo the sociologist.
