Abstract

In this paper recent evolution of modernization in Brazilian agriculture in the onsetof years 2000, is studied, considering several modernization indicators that expressproductivity, technical progress and capital intensity. Data are based on official sources asIBGE ? Brazilian Institute of Statistics and Geography ? as well as regularly publisheddata from industry, given the restriction that last Agriculture Census was done in1995/96. Most of the modernization indicators have as denominators the amountof cultivated area with temporary crops or the number of occupied persons.Regional differences among Brazilian states and regions are studied, based on 2002data. The results indicate that recent agriculture modernization relies mostly on therapid increase in land exploitation intensity and capital/labor relationship, withextraordinary productivity gains in the considered period. Concerning to the levelof agriculture modernization, it was observed a very unequal spatial distributionamong regions and by product. Also, the resources of rural credit are concentratedin some of the richest regions in country. These results confirm previous studiesabout agriculture modernization in Brazil.
