Le commerce mondial du khat est controversé. Les Etats-Unis et la plupart des pays européens l?ont interdit, l?assimilant à une substance psychotrope. Et, pourtant, sa culture contribue de manière significative aux revenus des agriculteurs d?Afrique orientale.1 Bien que les pouvoirs publics de la région dénoncent sa consommation, les Etats bénéficient néanmoins de l?afflux de devises étrangères et des revenus fiscaux qu?elle génère.
