¿Por qué crean spin-offs académicas los investigadores españoles?

En España, los primeros ejemplos "formales" de spin-offs académicas surgen a finales de los años 90 al igual que las primeras estructuras y programas de apoyo a la creación de empresas innovadoras basadas en el conocimiento científico. En la presente década este fenómeno ha empezado a fortalecerse, mostrando una tendencia creciente en la generación de este tipo de empresas a partir del 2001, alcanzando un total de 530 spin-offs en 2006 (RedOTRI, 2007). En este trabajo se aborda el estudio de este fenómeno, a través de un análisis descriptivo de un grupo de spin-offs académicas y de las características y motivaciones de sus promotores. El estudio se basa en una muestra de 152 emprendedores académicos, asociados 127 spin-offs y 11 proyectos de empresa. El 87% de los emprendedores participantes son investigadores vinculados a universidades públicas y el 13% a Organismos Públicos de Investigación. Por otra parte, el 59% de estos investigadores pertenece al área de las Ciencias Exactas y Naturales; el 24% al área de Ingeniería y Tecnología y un 17% proviene de otras áreas. Este documento se estructura de la siguiente forma. En el segundo apartado se aborda la descripción de las spin-offs académicas creadas por los investigadores. En el tercer apartado se examinan las principales características del perfil de los emprendedores académicos. En el cuarto apartado, se describen las motivaciones para emprender en la academia, cerrando con la presentación de algunas de las conclusiones más relevantes.
