Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive review of the urban informal sector economic activities in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, their contributions to employment and its potential for expansion. In analysing the results of a survey conducted in 1977 on 29 occupational categories within six economic sectors (manufacture, crafts, small trade, transport, construction and services), substantial reference is made to specify aspects such as assets, income investment, technology, skills, commercialisation and labour absorption. The author suggests that the informal sector expansion is limited by the lack of access to credit, high costs of raw materials, high taxes, low skills qualifications and low demand. The author discusses existing norms and institutions related to the informal sector activities and recommends the reformulation of government policies, aimed at creating more favourable productive conditions to microenterprises.
