Abstract

"There is a lack of systematic knowledge about the particular life circumstances of refugee women, children and adolescents in Germany. The aim of the research project "Refugee Women and Families" (GeFF) was therefore to systematically investigate the special circumstances of the flight and integration processes of refugee women and families based on the IAB-BAMF-SOEP refugee survey. The first central finding is that the family structures of women and men with refugee backgrounds differ greatly: the majority of women arrives to Germany with their families, while over half of the men initially arrive alone. This is partly due to the risks and costs of the flight, which are reflected in the flight patterns of families: In contrast to men, women and children usually flee with their families or follow men on safer routes. The separation from family members during and after the flight furthermore correlates with increased health risks, especially for women. Thirdly, refugee women show considerably less social and economic participation than refugee men. This could on the one hand relate to less work experience and increased health impairments for women; on the other hand, women more often than men live with their families for whom they supply most of the care work."
