Abstract
This paper presents the methodology and results of the Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS), conducted by the Croatian National Bank in 2020 and 2021, as a Croatian contribution to the wave 2021 of the harmonized survey defined and promoted by the Household Finance and Consumption Network (HFCN), expert group organized by the ECB. Contentwise, the main topics of the survey are financial and nonfinancial assets, financial liabilities, employment, income and consumption of the households, while as an addendum in this wave, the module on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on households’ finance and consumption has been included. The fieldwork was organized via the CAPI (Computer Assisted Personal Interview) method applied on a two-stage stratified sample of 4,072 household units, with a response rate of 33.3%. Once collected, data were statistically processed by weighting and estimations, as well as by stochastic multiple imputation, then aggregated and presented in a standardized format defined by the HFCN. The paper also contains a short statistical comment on the results, providing a static picture of the results, as well as a comparison with the same results from the previous wave. In addition, many results are compared to those of the euro area or a particular group of countries that participated in the wave 2021 of the HFCS, while some of them (when possible) are placed in the context of similar results obtained from external statistical sources (EU-SILC, financial and nonfinancial accounts of the Republic of Croatia).
