Abstract

Denna text handlar om Gunnar Westin Silverstolpe, den förste professorn i nationalekonomi vid Göteborgs Handelshögskola. En kortfattad bakgrund tecknas i form av Göteborgs Högskolas tillkomst 1891 som en kompromiss mellan dem som ville ha en ”Fri Akademi” utan examina och inriktad på folkbildning och dem som redan från början ville ha en handelshögskola. Silverstolpe skrev poesi, tecknade den svenska kooperativa rörelsens historia och författade lättlästa läroböcker i nationalekonomi. Hans bredd innebar paradoxalt nog att han var en god representant för idéer om högskolans inriktning, som aldrig kom att förverkligas. Han var en stor folkbildare och påverkade det ekonomiska tänkandet, särskilt inom svensk arbetarrörelse.
