Abstract

The paper contributes to the discussion on the nature of embeddedness of simple forms of entrepreneurial activity in a context which is extremely hostile to entrepreneurship. It draws on 30 case studies with individuals involved in informal cross border entrepreneurial activity in three border regions of Belarus. The paper demonstrates the family embeddedness of this type of activity in the specific context provided by transition conditions. Moreover, the results show that informal entrepreneurship contributes to social inclusion and often is a starting point for the development of more substantial and legal ventures.
