Abstract

The coexistence of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks is reshaping the broadband access ecosystem, raising important questions regarding technology adoption, market equilibrium, and service complementarities. This paper proposes an analytical framework to study user subscription choices between FTTH, 5G, combined FTTH-5G offers, or no subscription. The model captures user heterogeneity through mobility behavior, home 5G coverage conditions, and differentiated quality-of-service perceptions. User decisions are formulated through utility comparisons that incorporate achievable transmission rates, pricing strategies, and mobility-dependent connectivity benefits.The framework enables the characterization of equilibrium market penetration levels for the different technologies and highlights the conditions under which FTTH and 5G behave either as substitutes or as complementary services. The proposed approach also provides a tractable basis for analyzing the impact of pricing policies, coverage improvements, and quality differentiation on user adoption dynamics. The results offer insights for both network operators and policymakers regarding the evolution of converged fixed-mobile broadband ecosystems.
