Abstract

This article offers a comparative analysis of regional integration processes within ASEAN and ECOWAS from the perspective of international political economy. It seeks to understand how the political and economic dimensions of integration interact within two groupings that display distinct institutional and economic trajectories. The conceptual framework combines the notions of regionalism and regionalization in order to capture both the political construction of regional organizations and the observed evolution of economic exchanges. Methodologically, the study draws on a qualitative analysis of institutions, governance modes, leadership patterns, and monetary and security arrangements, complemented by an empirical approach based on regionalization indicators and two gravity models. The article highlights the diversity of integration logics observed in Southeast Asia and West Africa and underlines the value of a comparative approach that links institutional dimensions with economic dynamics.
