Abstract

This systematic literature review on comparative regionalism, covering the period 2000–2020, examines how this field has progressively taken shape within regionalism studies. Based on a corpus of thirty-seven theoretical references selected according to explicit criteria, the article describes the definitions and aims attributed to comparative regionalism and reconstructs the main stages of its evolution. The analysis distinguishes three periods – emergence (2000–2003), structuring (2005–2011) and consolidation (2012–2020) – and highlights the specific contributions of works considered as fundamental or complementary. It shows how the debate has moved from the implicit use of the European model towards approaches that pay greater attention to the diversity of regional experiences and to the conditions of comparison themselves. The discussion focuses in particular on critiques of Eurocentrism and on proposals seeking to combine comparative requirements, sensitivity to context and interdisciplinary openness.
