Abstract

How do galleries manage relationships with the artists they represent, and what means do they use to promote them? Although specific cases are highlighted here and there, and ideas and information circulate, these elements remain partial and do not reflect the practices of the profession as a whole. However, the gallery world is diverse, with a wide variety of gallery profiles and practices, and there is little similarity between the practices of a small gallery and those of a mega-gallery, or between those of a regional gallery and those of a gallery with multiple international branches, etc. This report aims to provide an overview of the different practices in place. Based on an online survey conducted from mid-July to early September among 980 galleries located in France, with a response rate of around 35 to 40% (see methodology box), it seeks to show how galleries, in their diversity and according to their means, contribute to the dissemination and recognition of artists' work.
