The Return of Otto Neurath's Calculation in Kind in the Face of Ecological Crises

Abstract

There has been a resurgence of interest in Otto Neurath's ideas, particularly because he is recognized as a pioneer of ecological economics (through his concept of "calculation in kind," the forerunner of material flow analyses) and ecological planning. However, there are no publications in the literature that attempt to present and analyze Neurath's "calculation in kind" as comprehensively as possible. The main objective of this article is to address this gap—which is particularly acute in the French-speaking world, where there are very few publications on Neurath's socio-economic thought. The article also seeks to diagnose and explain the neglect into which Neurath's thought has fallen, as well as its resurgence and the surprising relevance of his ideas to our contemporary ecological challenges, within an approach to the history of economic thought inspired by Karl Mannheim's sociology of knowledge.
