Abstract

Tonti est mort ; je dois même dire que je n'ai jamais vu personne pour le regretter. Stevenson et Osbourne, Le mort vivant, p. 20 Depuis un ouvrage de 1936, nous disposons d'un portrait gravé de Lorenzo Tonti, projeteur typique du XVII e siècle, inventeur d'un montage financier reposant sur l'aléa de mortalité, la tontine. Nous retrouvons son visage dans une scène de genre qui apparait dans un film que fait réaliser le plus ancien promoteur de ce type de montage, Le Conservateur. Nous montrons que ces deux représentations sont fausses, que la première est la gravure représentant, bien après son décès, un intellectuel allemand, le professeur Morhof et que c'est ce portrait qui est incrusté, dans un deuxième temps, dans une reproduction d'un tableau célèbre réalisé à la gloire de Louis XIV.
