Do Social Media Drive the Quality of Institutions ?

Abstract

This paper studies the causal effect of social media on institutional quality. To address endogeneity, we use an instrumental variable approach with accessibility variables (cost of media use and internet penetra- tion). Using data from 143 countries between 2013 and 2021, we find that social media penetration has a positive effect on institutional quality. The effect is more important in developing countries than in advanced economies. The tests of over-identification and robustness to alternative measures have been satisfied.
