Abstract

The importance of business cycle analysis justifies the existence of several business cycle dating organizations for industrialized countries. Currently there is no specific reference chronology for the purposes of diagnosis of the cyclical behavior of the economy the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU). We use the classical NBER and a mixed multi-change point approaches to describe the repetitive sequences that underlie business cycles with reference to the economy of Cote d'Ivoire. The reference chronology for business cycle is determined on the basis of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and a population of coincident indicators, which tracks fluctuations in the ivorian economic activity. We succefully anticipate business cycle upturns and downturns of the leading economy in the region. Moreover, we add a reference chronology of the business cycle for the economy of Cote d'Ivoire that can be used monitor the WAEMU economy.
