Abstract

La reprise post-Covid fut accompagnée d'une hausse de l'inflation, largement amplifiée ensuite par l'invasion de l'Ukraine par la Russie en 2022. Après avoir cherché à stimuler une inflation moribonde entre 2009 et 2020, les banques centrales se sont d'abord montrées prudentes en n'augmentant pas les taux d'intérêt même si l'inflation dépassait leur cible depuis l'été 2021. Le resserrement généralisé des politiques monétaires s'est produit en 2022. L'inflation dépassait alors 8 % aux États-Unis ou dans la zone euro, lorsque la Réserve fédérale, puis la BCE ont augmenté les taux en mars et juillet 2022 respectivement 1 . Après plus de 10 ans de taux d'intérêt proches de zéro, le taux directeur aux États-Unis fut ainsi porté à 5,5 % en juillet 2023, quand la BCE ou la Banque d'Angleterre allaient jusqu'à 4,5 % et 5,25 % respectivement. Au Japon, cet épisode inflationniste fut une aubaine puisqu'il signifiait la sortie d'un épisode déflationniste de près de 30 ans. Pour autant, après quelques tentatives de remontée des taux qui avait fait replonger l'économie japonaise dans la stagnation, la Banque du Japon s'est montrée encore plus prudente que ses homologues, attendant mars 2024 pour repasser le taux directeur en territoire positif.
