Abstract

Les élections américaines sont un grand révélateur, au sens photographique du terme, des clichés économiques. Trois perspectives différentes sur ces élections livrent trois éclairages sur l'état de l'économie américaine tout d'abord, sur l'état de la pensée des économistes ensuite, et sur la nature de la relation entre les économistes et les politiques enfin. Les primaires américaines ont été marquées par la « résistible ascension » de Donald Trump, et l'émergence de Bernie Sanders qui a bousculé Hilary Clinton sur sa gauche sans parvenir à s'imposer. Le succès de Donald Trump, qui a contourné le parti républicain, repose sur des ressorts politiques qui utilisent une certaine paranoïa quant à la perte d'identité des Etats-Unis face aux concessions économiques faites à la Chine, politiques à l'Iran, militaires en Irak. Le thème du déclassement américain est réel aux Etats-Unis. Le succès de ce thème provient aussi de la réalité de la situation économique des classes moyennes et populaires aux Etats-Unis. Les cicatrices sociales induites par les inégalités aux Etats-Unis, magnifiquement étudiées par Thomas Piketty, se voient dans la rue, tant l'inégalité d'accès au système de santé est réelle (et incompréhensible pour un Européen). Si ce thème des inégalités est l'axe central de la campagne de Bernie Sanders, la colère populaire s'est aussi exprimée dans le camp républicain.
