Abstract

Les empires coloniaux européens ont joué un rôle si important dans l'histoire mondiale du XVe au XXe siècle qu'il est tentant de leur imputer les différences actuelles de développement. En fait, créés en partie seulement pour des raisons économiques, les empires n'ont sans doute pas eu un effet aussi important que celui qu'on leur prête sur la croissance européenne après le XVIIIe siècle. En revanche, ils ont souvent été à l'origine de handicaps durables pour le développement des ex-territoires colonisés.
