Abstract

Au cours du cycle actuel, l'inflation connaît une évolution vraiment particulière se démarquant de son comportement traditionnel : alors que l'économie américaine est entrée dans sa huitième année de croissance et que le taux de chômage se situe depuis 3 ans maintenant en dessous de son niveau naturel, estimé à 5,8 % par le Congressional Budget Office (CBO), l'indice des prix à la consommation (CPI) affiche une progression exceptionnellement lente. Selon le CBO, le passage du PIB au-dessus de son potentiel et celui du taux de chômage en-deçà de son niveau « naturel » auraient dû provoquer une hausse de l'inflation de respectivement 0,3 et 0,7 point entre la fin 1994 et le début 1998(1). Or, elle a perdu près d'un point sur cette période (...).
