Abstract

How possible it is to reduce delinquency and criminality in society is the subject of recurrent debates. These often focus on the effectiveness of criminal policies and, in particular, on the use of imprisonment. This article aims to present how these issues were addressed by the economic literature and the main results found in the last two decades. Contrary to what is generally said, some of these studies highlight that increasing the hardness of sanctions is not necessary to reduce delinquency.
