Abstract

Le vieillissement démographique est souvent présenté comme un frein à l'expansion économique des nations. Mais est-il vraiment un obstacle à la croissance ? Par quels canaux influence-t-il l'activité économique ?Comment l'État-providence pourrait-il s'adapter au vieillissement et aux défis posés par la dépendance des personnes âgées ? L'ouvrage présente les outils utilisés par l'analyse économique pour étudier le vieillissement et ses multiples interactions avec l'activité économique. Si le vieillissement peut ralentir la croissance en réduisant le ratio des actifs sur les inactifs, plusieurs mécanismes d'ajustement portant sur l'épargne, l'éducation et la durée de la carrière peuvent compenser cet effet. Au-delà de son impact sur la production marchande, le vieillissement pose également aux économistes la question de la prise en compte de la durée de vie dans la mesure de la performance économique des nations. L'ouvrage s'interroge enfin sur les grands défis auxquels le vieillissement confronte l'État-providence, qu'il s'agisse de la redistribution ou de la prise en charge des personnes âgées dépendantes.
