Abstract

Cet article analyse différents types de crédit qui ont coexisté et interagi dans la France du xviiie siècle en se concentrant sur deux types de prêts entre particuliers faisant l'objet d'un contrat écrit, les uns intermédiés par des notaires, les autres non. Après avoir estimé leur importance, il montre que ces deux segments ont connu des trajectoires très différenciées et explore les facteurs qui pourraient l'expliquer. Comme chacun de ces facteurs a évolué à son propre rythme, retracer leur évolution dans la France du xviiie siècle mais aussi au-delà peut suggérer des conjectures sur les façons jusqu'ici inexplorées dont ces deux segments des marchés du crédit se sont développés dans le temps et dans l'espace.
