Abstract

« La défaite de juin 1940 entraîne une perturbation considérable des transports de voyageurs en France. Il y a bien sûr des obstacles géopolitiques – les conventions d'armistice, la division du pays en zones et la domination maritime britannique –, mais la principale contrainte est la pénurie de carburants, liquides en particulier. L'entre-deux-guerres a été marqué par un recours massif au pétrole, avec le développement de l'automobile, de l'autobus urbain, de l'autocar rural, de l'autorail ferroviaire, des paquebots au Diesel et de l'aviation commerciale. Toutes ces nouvelles motorisations sont remises en cause par l'interruption des approvisionnements pétroliers extérieurs, dont la France est entièrement dépendante. Il lui faut faire avec de maigres stocks quand ils ne sont pas confisqués par l'occupant. Hervé Joly retrace ici la manière dont les différents modes de transport se sont adaptés et celle dont les Français se sont, malgré tout, beaucoup déplacés, pour le meilleur ou pour le pire. » (Droz)
