Abstract

The ethics of artificial intelligence (AI) can be analysed by starting with the concept of ‘Trustworthy AI' promoted by the European Union, which is based on lawfulness, respect for ethical principles, and technical and social robustness. Anchoring the discussion in political philosophy, this directory presents ethical standardisation as a foundation of social life, foreshadowing legal norms. It then details the seven essential ethical principles for AI, as established by the European Commission's High-Level Expert Group (HLEG AI): human agency and oversight, technical robustness and safety, privacy and data governance, transparency, diversity, non-discrimination and fairness, societal and environmental well-being, and accountability.
