Abstract

The article draws on the theory of social reproduction as well as insights from "feminist institutionalist" research to conceptualize a "mode of reproduction," defined as the institutional arrangement that organizes the reproduction of the labor force under capitalism. This mode of reproduction is then linked to the concept of accumulation regimes, which is central to regulation theory. Based on the hypothesis of existing internal contradictions in capitalism and on the notion of crisis, the theory of social reproduction shows that the institutional arrangements underpinning reproduction also contribute to the crises of accumulation regimes and their reconfigurations. The article specifically explores the connection between the crisis of Fordism and the crisis of care.
