Abstract

This ninth colloquium of the Maison Archéologie et Ethnologie, René-Ginouvès, entitled "Wealth and Societies" is part of a certain continuity since, after the first meetings around Polanyi centred on barter (2002), the market (2003), and exchanges (2004), the previous colloquium (2011) was held on money. If we have put the spotlight on the notion of wealth this time, it is because this vast subject, too, cannot be the sole preserve of the economic sciences. We, archaeologists, historians, anthropologists and specialists in the human sciences in general, also have a lot to say on this theme, which can only be an essential perspective for the knowledge of societies in the past as well as in the present, here and elsewhere.
