Abstract

This article deals with the place taken by so-called unskilled employment in the career paths of young people and the effects of com- petition between them according to their qualification levels and its changes over the course of their career and the accumulation of work experience. Recalling that the diploma remains the best protection against unemploy- ment, we show, using data from the Céreq's Generation 2010 survey, how the context of job shortage faced by this cohort when they enter the labor market, reinforces the effects of competition between young people. Indeed, at the beginning of their career, the non-gra- duates are crowded out of unskilled jobs in favor young high school graduated. After a few years on the labor market, access to skilled employment remains difficult for them. Thus, even as the level of young people's diplo- mas is constantly rising, the deteriorated eco- nomic environment has a particularly delete- rious effect on the integration of young people without qualification, which may exclude them from access to jobs, even unskilled.
