Le privé est politique… et économique ! Pour une économie politique du travail de gestation pour autrui

In the public debate about surrogacy, to qualify what surrogates do as a kind of "work" is widely perceived as a way of supporting the forms of commodifica-tion and exploitation that target women's bodies in global circuits of the bioeconomy. As against this construal, which accompanies the moral condemnation of this reproductive practice particularly in its "commercial" version, the article offers a feminist plea for the conceptualization of surrogacy as work. Based on ethnographic inquiries conducted among Indian surrogates, and theoretically informed by Marxism, the ethics of care and the notion of intersectionality, the article aims, in fine, to highlight the fecundity of this conceptualization not only for the full recognition of the surrogates, but also for a critical diagnosis of the divisions of labour that structure capitalist society.
