Abstract

Bonne nouvelle : il existe encore des doctorants prêts à déchiffrer une documentation aride pour éclairer un milieu nébuleux, celui des paysans (90 % du monde médiéval, tout de même), ces derniers de cordée que l'anthropologie historique a laissés au bord de la route... Issu d'une thèse soutenue en 2012 à l'université libre de Bruxelles, sous la direction de J.-P. Devroey, le livre de Nicolas Schroeder, l'ouvrage se singularise par sa chronologie, très longue et surtout brisant l'habi­tuelle limite du XIIe s., tenu pour le début du « déclin » des établissements bénédictins; ce faisant, l'a. peut éclairer des phénomènes peu étudiés jusqu'alors. Une autre particularité est la volonté de faire une histoire totale, qui transcende de ce fait l'institution monastique.
