Abstract

Cet article s'intéresse à la manière dont les républicains socialistes de la période 1840-1850 ont justifié l'avènement de la République. Il rend compte de la démonstration théorique de la célèbre devise républicaine de la France révolutionnaire proposée par ces républicains « avancés », en insistant sur la centralité du concept « d'égalité » qui seule rend la liberté effective. Au croisement du socialisme et du républicanisme, ces hommes de 1848 tracent les contours d'une théorie de la république sociale et, d'un point de vue programmatique, proposent un nouveau cadre institutionnel susceptible de la réaliser. Ce cadre structurel alternatif entre en confrontation avec le cadre libéral des économistes « néo-smithiens » qui revendiquent, contre l'utopie, le réalisme.
