Abstract

Au début des années 1850, Lyon ne possède pas de centre des affaires digne des grandes villes réunissant les fonctions commerciales et bancaires. Dix ans après, le centre-ville est métamorphosé, dans un bâti flambant neuf d'une facture architecturale recherchée, où se déploie ce qui lui faisait auparavant défaut. Les transformations de l'économie lyonnaise au cours des années 1860 prennent ainsi place dans un cadre urbain profondément renouvelé et qui semble fait pour les accueillir. Cette vocation est affirmée dès le stade de la conception puisque le principal monument projeté est le palais du commerce abritant la bourse, la chambre de commerce et le tribunal des prud'hommes. Vaïsse, nommé préfet du Rhône en 1853 et instigateur de ces grands travaux, prend pour modèle la city londonienne plus que l'haussmannisation parisienne, qui est concomitante des opérations urbaines à Lyon. Le percement de la rue impériale, actuelle rue de la République, entre 1854 et 1857 constitue une des toutes premières de ces opérations, la plus importante et la plus emblématique
