Abstract

This paper studies the changes in the young adults' relationship to the car. It is based on mixed methods, combining qualitative interviews carried out in Lyon, and secondary analyses of 1995 and 2006 Lyon household travel surveys. A slightly downward trend in driving licence holding rates can be observed as a feature of broader changes in attitudes and mobility practices of the young, especially in central and dense areas. It can be related to financial burden, but also to the significant investment of time required to obtain the licence. Furthermore, the young aged 18 to 35 who are in capacity to drive a car drive less than previous generations at the same age. Both of these trends reflect changes in the relationships to the car, less considered than before as an object of desire and more as a mobility tool among others, with its own advantages and disadvantages.
