Abstract

Les nombres ont envahi l'espace public, ils sont devenus indispensables pour comprendre le monde qui nous entoure et pour en parler. Mais force est de constater que nous manquons d'outils à la fois pratiques et théoriques nous permettant de comprendre ces données chiffrées, de les critiquer, de les mettre en perspective et de les articuler pour produire une connaissance d'un phénomène social. D'où l'intérêt du présent ouvrage. Celui-ci vise premièrement à vous faire acquérir les savoir-faire de base en matière statistique (calculs de pourcentages et de taux, lecture de tableaux, maîtrise du vocabulaire). Son second objectif est l'apprentissage d'une démarche rigoureuse d'utilisation de ce type de données. Enfin, il souhaite fournir à chacun la capacité d'évaluer le sérieux et la crédibilité des discours et analyses fondés sur des informations quantitatives. Ce livre n'est donc pas un manuel de statistiques, mais un ouvrage de réflexion et d'analyse sociologiques des données chiffrées et de leur utilisation. Il est, pour ce faire, illustré de nombreux exemples d'actualité ayant trait notamment au chômage et à la délinquance, à la démocratisation de l'enseignement et à l'évolution des inégalités...
