La difficile gestion du retour d’expatriation : trois pistes d’analyse

Abstract

À partir d'une recherche qualitative menée auprès de 39 acteurs concernés par les problématiques de l'expatriation et d'une revue de la littérature consacrée à ce sujet, nous proposons dans cet article une analyse de la gestion des expatriés au sein de firmes multinationales (FMN). Trois pistes de réflexion ont ainsi pu être mises en évidence : a) la gestion de l'expatriation est souvent présentée comme se décomposant en trois phases distinctes, ce qui empêche de saisir les interdépendances entre ces différentes étapes, b) les expatriés constituent une population hétérogène, mais cette hétérogénéité n'est que rarement appréhendée par les FMN qui ont à gérer cette population ou par la littérature traitant de cette thématique, c) et, enfin, la gestion de l'expatriation est souvent dominée par des considérations d'ordres administratif, financier et quantitatif, alors que la gestion des expatriés est avant tout une affaire de gestion des carrières.
