Abstract

L'œuvre économique de Nicolas-François Canard (1754-1833) est souvent considérée comme la première tentative d'application de l'algèbre à la science économique. Mais on aurait tort de réduire la pensée économique de N.-F. Canard au seul recours à l'instrument mathématique, lequel fut l'objet de jugements contrastés de la part de la postérité. L'intérêt de l'œuvre se lit également dans sa critique de la pensée physiocratique et dans son analyse des concepts de latitude et d'équilibre. Largement diffusés en France et en Europe, les Principes d'économie politique ont eu quelque influence sur l'édification de la science économique, notamment sur la pensée de Sismondi. Le présent ouvrage contient, outre les Principes d'économie politique (1801), le Mémoire sur les emprunts publics (1796) et le Mémoire sur les causes qui produisent la stagnation et le décroissement du commerce en France (1826), rassemblant ainsi en un volume la totalité de l'œuvre économique de N.-F. Canard.
