Abstract

Cet article propose une relecture des sources pour dégager une nouvelle datation pour l'entrée de Lemercier de la Rivière dans les cercles intellectuels de Quesnay et de Mirabeau. Ce faisant, ce Physiocrate généralement admis par les commentateurs comme auteur secondaire de l'Ecole dirigée par Quesnay apparaît comme l'un de ses fondateurs. Une relecture des sources courantes et une étude de pièces plus rares permettent de montrer que Lemercier de la Rivière est déjà intellectuellement dans la perspective physiocratique avant son premier départ pour la Martinique en janvier 1759 (pour sa prise de fonction à l'intendance des Iles-du-Vent) et que les premiers contacts avec la marquis de Mirabeau (et sans doute le docteur François Quesnay) sont déjà noués.
