Abstract

Cet article propose une synthèse du voyage de Pétersbourg que Paul Pierre Lemercier de la Rivière accomplit en 1767-1768 à la demande de la tsarine Catherine II. Cette expérience concrète en terre russe est marquée par l'échec : le physiocrate doit conseiller l'impératrice en matière politique mais rentre prématurément en France sans parvenir à s'exprimer et sera poursuivi durant des années par les railleries de la Tsarine et de ses relais européens (Denis Diderot et Friedrich Melchior von Grimm notamment). La présente recherche renouvelle la lecture de l'événement à partir d'une consultation des Archives des actes anciens à Moscou qui permet, grâce à la correspondance retrouvée de Lemercier de la Rivière, d'établir les conditions et le déroulement de son séjour russe.
