Le nouveau visage du rugby professionnel français : argent, succès et dérives

Abstract

Le rugby est encore un jeune sport professionnel. Sa transformation en une activité marchande officielle en 1995 a représenté une véritable révolution pour ce sport historiquement régi par des organismes nationaux et internationaux peu enclins à une quelconque évolution, et traditionnellement acquis à la cause de l'amateurisme. Vingt ans plus tard il est intéressant de faire le point sur la situation économique de ce rugby professionnel français, dans un monde ou la marchandisation du spectacle sportif est une donnée objective essentielle. La situation du rugby professionnel français est paradoxale. D'un côté il bénéficie de recettes en croissance régulière (sponsoring, billeterie) et de droits télévisuels en forte augmentation, mais de l'autre les déficits de certains clubs du Top 14, dont le champion 2015, se creuse année après année de manière inquiétante. Cet ouvrage analyse les conditions économiques des clubs professionnels de rugby et permet de mieux comprendre les différentes stratégies déployées par la Ligue Nationale de Rugby, pour conforter et accélérer ce dynamisme afin de renforcer l'attractivité du championnat. Les déficits et l'apport des "Sugar Daddy" sont examinés. Il est aussi souligné combien la régulation du marché du travail et "la contrainte budgétaire lâche", proposée par la DNACG et la LNR, sont insuffisantes pour contrôler certaines dérives. Au-delà du constat d'un mariage à trois (World Rugby, LNR, FFR) rarement harmonieux, la conclusion porte sur l'évolution du rugby, ce sport de gentleman confronté aux mirages de l'argent.
