Jean-Baptiste Say et l'entrepreneur : la question de la filiation avec Cantillon et Turgot

Abstract

Depuis Schumpeter, il existe une tradition dans l'histoire de la pensée économique qui place l'entrepreneur de Say dans une filiation Cantillon-Turgot. L'objet de cet article est de montrer que cette filiation n'existe pas, même si certains thèmes comme le risque, la connaissance ou encore l'organisation de la production apparaissent chez ces trois auteurs. Plus précisément, il est possible de repérer une double rupture entre Say et ses prédécesseurs. La première réside dans le traitement de la production et de la division du travail, qui montre que l'entrepreneur chez Say n'a pas le même rôle que chez Turgot. La seconde porte sur leur conception de l'incertitude et du profit qui fait que la place de l'entrepreneur dans la répartition des revenus chez Say n'est pas la même que chez Cantillon ou Turgot. Les implications de cette double rupture sont précisées en conclusion.
