Metropolization in Hanoi : An Understanding by Urban Growth and Dynamics

Abstract

The administrative territory of Hanoi was redrawn in 2008 by integrating a wide area including Hà Tây province, the Mê Linh district of Vĩnh Phúc province and some districts of Hòa Bình province. This territorial restructuring reveals the metropolitan dynamics in all economic, demographic and space terms. By focusing on a quantitative approach and a cartographic analysis, we plan to present all of these current metropolitan dynamics to better understand the specifics of metropolization in Hanoi. We rely principally on data from General Statistics Office (GSO) and Hanoi Statistical Office (HSO). Analyses indicate that the metropolization of Hanoi is characterized not only by an economic growth and an over-consumption of urban space in a context of strong population growth, but also by a functional specialization of space.
