Irrationalité pratique et contrôle de soi par anticipation

Abstract

À quoi une éthique pour agents faibles pourrait-elle ressembler ? La faiblesse envisagée ici n'est pas caractérielle, individuelle, mais constitutionnelle. Si l'on fait l'hypothèse que l'irrationalité pratique, entendue comme le fait d'un écart entre évaluation et motivation, est une condition d'arrière-plan et non pas une exception pathologique, plusieurs questions traditionnelles de la philosophie morale se posent sous un nouveau jour : (a) Quelle est la fonction du recours au point de vue d'un « meilleur soi » dans la vie morale ? Comment concevoir le « soi multiple » ? (b) Quelles techniques peuvent être mobilisées par des agents qui ne disposent pas du haut degré de contrôle de soi qui est supposé par les morales, en particulier par les morales du devoir ? (c) Comment concevoir, sous cette hypothèse pessimiste, la liberté, l'autonomie et le rôle des engagements volontaires ?
