Abstract

Le débat actuel sur la stagnation séculaire retrouve celui lancé par Keynes et Hansen en 1938 (avec Full Recovery or Stagnation) lors de la rechute américaine. Il atteint son apogée à la fin de la guerre avec le livre anti-stagnationniste de Terborgh (The Bogey of Economic Maturity), les réponses de Hansen et de ses disciples, et l'intervention de nombreux économistes américains et européens. Quels furent les arguments des uns et des autres ? Le plus fameux des opposants à Hansen et aux new-dealers était Schumpeter. Il va s'opposer publiquement au jeune marxohansénien Paul Sweezy en un débat (1946) que Samuelson célébrera comme un combat de gladiateurs à l'époque « où les géants arpentaient la terre et les jardins d'Harvard ».
