Abstract

L'objectif de ce chapitre est de replacer les travaux de Jean-Baptiste Say portant sur les mutations technologiques au sein d'un vaste panorama de travaux, analyses, informations, institutions nouvelles ou textes divers cherchant à glorifier, à expliquer ou à mettre en scène ces nouvelles techniques. Ils peuvent être classées en trois grandes familles. Il y a d'abord la défense des "Données de la puissance nationale" avec une longue série de travaux historico-statistiques et de créations d'institutions particulières destinés à glorifier les acquis techniques des nations. Il y a ensuite les "Voyages d'étude" avec les récits et les descriptions de voyageurs fascinés par ces nouveautés étrangères. Il y a enfin les "Traditions littéraires" produites par des écrivains ou des journalistes présentant comme des aventures ou des grandes explorations.
